Armidale Secondary College students will have the opportunity to get started in some casual work or find out more about their future jobs with more than 45 local businesses joining a Job Fair at the school next week.
Lana Hardman, Careers Adviser at Armidale Secondary College, said the Job Fair on
Wednesday 26 July was aimed at introducing potential employers to potential employees.
“While we certainly want school and education to be the main focus for our students, we
recognise learning doesn’t just take place in a classroom in defined school hours,” Ms
Hardman said.
“Casual work can be a great opportunity for our young people to demonstrate work ethic,
reliability, planning and organisational skills – all incredibly important to a student’s ongoing
success through high school and beyond.”
On the day, students are being encouraged to dress as the career they aspire to or a
profession which they admire.
Forty-five local businesses will set up a stall in the multipurpose hall, so Armidale Secondary College students can ask questions, share resumes and even do an on-the-spot interview. There is also the opportunity to talk traineeships for young people who are interested in a more hands-on approach to education.
“School-based traineeships are an invaluable opportunity to combine recognised qualifications and on-the-job training while completing the HSC,” Ms Hardman said.
“Our students work at so many places around town, including Armidale Court House, the University of New England, restaurants and care providers.”
“We’re incredibly proud of them.”
Local businesses jumped at the chance to be part of the Job Fair, with the venue set to be filled to capacity.
Clinton Sanderson, Human Resources Officer for Scott Group who operate major local employers Uniplan, Duroclass, and Timberline, said the company was excited to be participating.
“We are enthusiastic about supporting local jobs and industry in line with our company mission to provide for the local community, elevate our employees and create lasting relationships in a hardworking, family spirit of the highest ethics,” Mr Sanderson said.
“We would love to give the oncoming generation of the opportunity to learn about the vista of opportunities we can offer and how we can help facilitate dream career success stories for the workforce of the future.”
