Art workshop a breath of fresh air

Art lovers are invited to immerse themselves in a weekend of art in the open air this March at New England Regional Art Museum (NERAM).

The Friends of NERAM is holding a weekend art event on – Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 March – taking participants to the Gara Gorge for a full day of art workshopping following up with a studio session on Sunday.

Leading local artists Leah Bullen and Isabelle Devos will teach the workshops which are suitable for beginners and experienced artists “en plein air”.

Saturday’s sessions will explore techniques for capturing ideas and inspiration on the spot and Sunday will develop and polish the works back in the studio.

The weekend concludes with a whole group gathering and sharing of work on Sunday.

“The Plein Air School is an opportunity to celebrate the artistic talent of artists taking inspiration from the beauty of New England in Autumn and to connect art lovers within our community.” said Friends of NERAM Chair Debra Kelliher.

“The arts bring so much to a regional community like New England and we are excited to offer the chance for people to learn from top artists, to create their own works and to make lifelong connections.”

About the artists

Leah Bullen

Combining drawing, collage, painting and printing techniques, Leah Bullen’s practice operates as a re-enactment of memory and experience of place. Her practice explores locations that recreate and curate the natural world, such as botanic glasshouses and gardens. These field sites act as a model through which she explores how we experience and consume the spectacle of nature and ‘landscape’ more broadly within contemporary culture during an era of environmental uncertainty.

Isabelle Devos

Isabelle is best known for her rural and suburban landscape paintings which often start as outdoor studies using charcoal, ink and gouache. Her work captures not only the physical features of the landscape but also the light and shadow and the mood that lingers and shapes the present moment. Being outdoors and capturing the dynamic and ephemeral nature of the great outdoors is an enjoyable challenge for artists from the beginner to the more experienced.
