In a world where making friends as an adult can be surprisingly difficult, one woman has created something special in Inverell.

Emma Johnson, the founder of Inverell Social Women, understands first-hand how isolating it can be to move to a new town. Determined to build connections and share local experiences, Emma took the initiative to create a space where women of all ages and backgrounds could come together in a relaxed and welcoming environment.

“It can be really hard to make friends as an adult, let alone when you move to a new town, and for so many different reasons.

“And if you’re like me and work from home, that can be pretty socially isolating.

“There were so many different things I wanted to experience when I moved to Inverell, but I knew I’d get way more enjoyment out of doing so if I could share the experience and meet others in the process. I also often didn’t feel socially confident to attend some events or venues by myself.

“Not being athletically inclined, I wasn’t interested in joining a local sporting club, which I know is how many people make social connections. But I thought that surely there must be others out there like me who would be keen to meet up for all sorts of other local things every now and then.”

Emma launched the Inverell Social Women group on Facebook in January 2024, and what began as a simple idea to meet like-minded women has flourished into a thriving community. Their first event, a horse trail ride, saw 21 local women come together, ranging from complete beginners to experienced riders. The event was followed by a meal at the local pub, marking the start of something truly special.

Fast forward twelve months, and the group has grown to over 750 members, each woman bringing her own story and desire for social connection. Whether they’ve recently moved to Inverell, returned after years away, or have lived in the region their whole lives, the common thread is a shared appreciation for companionship and fun.

“Our members come from all walks of life,” Emma siad. “Some are new to town and looking for friends, others have lived here forever but want to expand their social circles. The most important thing is that everyone feels welcome and included.”

The group offers a diverse range of activities each month, ensuring that there’s something for everyone. From creative workshops to kayaking, trivia nights, music bingo, wine tastings, and casual coffee catch-ups, Emma carefully curates experiences that encourage engagement and inclusivity. By rotating meetups across local cafés, pubs, clubs, and restaurants, she also provides valuable support to local businesses.

“I try to keep the activities varied so there’s something for different interests,” Emma says. “Not everyone is into the same things, but the goal is to provide options where people can meet and interact naturally.”

Looking ahead to 2025, Emma remains committed to providing enriching experiences and regular meetups for the growing community. She hopes to continue expanding the variety of events and collaborating with local businesses to offer new and exciting opportunities for members.

“I’ve had so many women tell me that these meetups have had a huge impact on their lives,” Emma shares. “Knowing that this group is making a real difference in helping people feel less isolated and more connected is what keeps me motivated.”

The overwhelmingly positive feedback from members continues to inspire her, reinforcing the significance of these gatherings in fostering friendships and a sense of belonging.
