“Is the recorder a REAL instrument?” It’s a common question that Alexandra Bailliet-Joly, professional recorder player and Co-Director of the Australasian Recorder Festival, is asked regularly.

While the recorder may bring back memories of school days and learning simple tunes like “Hot Cross Buns,” this is just a small part of the story. The recorder is a gateway instrument to the world of music and a highly sophisticated instrument with a rich history.

The countdown is on for the Australasian Recorder Festival 2025, one of the most highly anticipated events for the global recorder community. Taking place from January 10 to January 17, 2025, the festival will be hosted at PLC Armidale.

Organised by Orpheus Music, a specialist recorder hub, the festival offers six exciting days of musical immersion. It caters to musicians of all levels, featuring technique classes, ensemble work, special interest topics, and concerts. With internationally renowned, national, and local tutors, participants will have the opportunity to learn, create, and collaborate in a nurturing environment.

The community is invited to attend the festival’s concerts, which are set to showcase the talent and creativity of the recorder world. The Competition Finalist’s Recital, featuring the winners of the Festival’s prestigious competition, is a must-see event. Other notable performances include:

  • Opening Concert (Chamber Orchestra Tutor Concert): 7:30 pm, 11 January 2025
  • Sarah Jeffery Recital (pictured – internationally acclaimed recorder player): 7:30 pm, 13 January 2025
  • Competition Finalist’s Recital (featuring the winners of the Competition Final): 7:30 pm, 14 January 2025

All concerts will be held at the Astra Arts Centre at PLC, located on Duval Street, Armidale. Tickets for individual concerts can be purchased online via TryBooking or at the door if available. A Concert Pass is also available for those who wish to attend multiple events. Entry is free for anyone aged 18 and under.

The Australasian Recorder Festival is not only an opportunity to hear world-class performances but also a celebration of the recorder’s role in the broader musical landscape. With a program that spans both educational and artistic experiences, this festival is perfect for both experienced musicians and casual music lovers.
