The small communities of Kootingal and Moonbi are celebrating the opening of the Kootingal Multipurpose Centre, comprising a refurbished hall and a new library.
The centre, officially opened on Tuesday, November 26, marks the completion of an eight-month project to create a versatile space for learning, connection, and community events.
Highlights include the modern library, complete with a conference room, accessible ramps, and an after-hours book return, as well as the refurbished hall with updated flooring and amenities.
Tamworth Regional Council began planning the project in 2021, engaging closely with the local community to ensure the design reflected their needs. Feedback from residents about the layout and the importance of customer service staff availability played a significant role in shaping the centre’s final design.
Councillor Marc Sutherland, who delivered the Welcome to Country at the opening, spoke about the deep cultural significance of storytelling in Aboriginal traditions and said Aboriginal people had been telling stories on this land in Kootingal for thousands of years.
“Stories are in everything,” he said.
“Books and libraries are a fantastic way of sharing stories.”
Tamworth Region Mayor Russell Webb acknowledged the importance of the new centre for the community.
“This multipurpose centre will be a hub for learning, connection, and events for years to come,” he said.
“We’re also proud to include features like the Balancing the Books sculpture (by Walcha’s Stephen King) and a sustainable garden, which reflect the values of creativity, sustainability, and community pride.”
The $2.16 million project was made possible through contributions from the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program ($1.2 million), the State Library of NSW ($335,000), and Tamworth Regional Council ($627,459).
As well as library services, the centre will host Tamworth Regional Council customer service staff during opening hours, providing residents with easier access to Council support in a central location.
Library opening hours are Tuesday 10 am–2 pm, Wednesday 2 pm–5 pm, Thursday and Friday 2 pm–5 pm, and Saturday 10 am–12 pm.
