In 2024, Quirindi Care Services (QCS) proudly celebrates its 50th anniversary, reflecting on the profound impact the organisation has had on the Quirindi region.

From its early beginnings to the modern facilities serving the community, QCS has grown and evolved to meet the needs of an ageing population while maintaining the strong community spirit that defines the town.

Historical Foundations

Quirindi’s history is rich, rooted in both Indigenous heritage and early European settlement. The town, originally home to the Kamilaroi people, has evolved significantly since European exploration began in the 1800s, becoming a key service centre in the Liverpool Plains region.

Establishment of Aged Care Services: In 1972, local resident Ken Heath recognised the need for aged care services in Quirindi.

“It was a vision to create a safe haven for our elderly,” Ken recalled. In 1974, after a public meeting of 63 concerned citizens, the Quirindi Retirement Homes Association (QRHA) was formed.

Community involvement was crucial; the generosity of local residents raised over $780,000 by 1988 to support the establishment of aged care facilities.

Growth Over the Years

1979: Completion of Elmswood (14 beds)

1982: The Villas (six independent living units) are completed

1984: A 36-bed nursing home opens, providing crucial support for the elderly

2009: Launch of the Eloura Aged Care Facility (68 beds)

“The development of these facilities was a true community effort,” said Kim Riley, General Manager of QCS. “We take immense pride in serving the people of our district, providing not just care, but a true home where residents feel safe, valued, and part of our family.”

Aged Care in Quirindi Today

QCS operates Independent Living Units and provides palliative and respite care, striving to maintain a four- or five-star rating for Eloura by adhering to the Australian Government Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission Quality Standards.

“Our mission is to exceed customers’ needs and expectations through well-planned quality care,” Kim added. “While the landscape of aged care has evolved, our commitment to compassionate care remains at the heart of everything we do.”

Looking Forward

As QCS celebrates this significant milestone, it honours the legacy of those who laid the foundation for aged care services in Quirindi.

“We celebrate our rich history and look forward to a future of continued service and care for the Quirindi community. Together, we look forward to the next 50 years of making a positive impact on the lives of our residents and the wider community,” Kim concluded.
