Six of the nine members of Gwydir Shire Council are not recontesting their seats, so this small council is looking at very significant change in leadership. Marilyn Dixon, Lyndon Mulligan, and Tiffany Galvin are the remaining three recontesting.
14 candidates in total are standing for the 9 seats, but only one ticket, with the other candidates all standing on their own. There’s an impressive pair of vibrant business women in photographer Rachel Sherman (formerly of the Warialda Standard), and Sarah Crump of Crump Stock & Station Agency (also the daughter of longtime Moree Plains Councillor Jim Crawford) who may very well run the table in this generational change for one of the more complex shires in the New England and its 3861 electors.

CRUMP Sarah  About I was born and raised in Moree, which is where I met and later married Damien Crump. In April 2015, we made the move to Bingara with our then newborn son, and in the years since have added to our family with 2 additional sons and identical twin daughters. Damien and I own small acreage on the edge of Bingara and we run a local livestock and real estate business, Crump Stock & Station Agency. In addition to our primary business, we also run a few beef cattle. I have been a Bingara resident for just under a decade, although I’m no stranger to the Gwydir Shire! My mum was born and raised in Warialda, as were both of my maternal grandparents. At the end of the day though, we’re just an average Gwydir Shire family feeling the same pinch as everyone else with cost of living expenses. We’ve experienced first hand the lack of early childcare access, understand the pressure on small businesses, get frequently frustrated with telecommunications – or a lack thereof, and like everyone in the agriculture industry, are constantly concerned about livestock prices and the weather! My concerns don’t always fall under the the local government banner, but I do believe that state and federal issues affect us at a local level. As a representative of the Gwydir Shire, I would promise to advocate for better services and more funding, and most importantly, to help provide a voice for our regional towns so that we can be heard loud and clear over our city counterparts. Most important issue Continuing the growth and strength of our shire, so it is financially secure well into the future. Vote for me because… Apart from the fact that it’s something that I’ve wanted to do for a long time, now feels like the right time. The Gwydir Shire is in a healthy state and has been well looked after by the outgoing councillors. It is at this time we need to continue the strong hold. We need a strong shire council to address all relevant issues. Issues such as roads, infrastructure, early childcare access, independent aged living, gaining recognition for the volume of product we grow in our vast agricultural area. SHERMAN Rachel About I was born and raised in Warialda and after university and working away, returned to raise my family and run our farming business here. I ran the former Warialda Standard newspaper for several years, but currently run my own fitness business. My husband Gerrard and I also run our farming business which is located between Warialda and Croppa Creek. We have a 14 year old daughter. Most important issue There are several priorities for the Gwydir Shire including keeping our Council financially secure and sustainable to stave off any future threats of amalgamation. Our roads network is extensive and vitally important for the productivity of our Shire, so the repairs and maintenance of roads and infrastructure must be prioritised. We must also ensure that industry is encouraged to stimulate further growth in the region. Vote for me because… I will stand up for what I believe, but I’ll always do it in a respectful way. I’ll always be considerate of others opinions and views and will look at the bigger picture when the hard decisions need to be made. I will ask the hard questions. I will bring a positive, forward thinking mindset to Council. I will look for how something can be done rather than the reasons it can’t be.
