Tamworth Regional Council is one of 88 councils across NSW that will take a share in a $60 million to boost walking and cycling, with $10 million dedicated to supporting active travel to and from schools, as part of the NSW Government’s Get NSW Active program.

Of the 88 projects, 51 are in regional NSW including 14 around primary schools, which will be funded under this latest round of the grant program to build crucial pathways and cycleways that promote walking and bike riding as an easy, safe, and convenient way for people to get around.

Tamworth Regional Council will receive $90,901 to construct a shared pathway on Warwick Rd in Hillvue. It will fill in crucial missing sections that will make it possible for students and their families and carers to complete safe and comfortable journeys to school.

This most recent round of the Get NSW Active program received 345 applications from councils with a total request worth $287.6 million which shows the strong desire for infrastructure that supports people who choose to walk or ride to their destination.

Tamworth Regional Council is also seeking local input to their planning for the future transport needs of the city.

The draft Tamworth Integrated Transport Plan seeks to reduce the level of dependency on travelling by private vehicle, a key aspect of this plan is to develop and improve the walking and cycling paths.

Tamworth Regional Council and Transport for NSW have worked in partnership to develop this plan, which focuses on what is required to enable a functional transport network as we continue to grow. This includes public transport services, active transport networks, intersection upgrades, corridor upgrades and new road linkages.

The community can give their feedback on the plan and its inclusions until 5pm Wednesday 3 July, 2024. Feedback can be made by visiting haveyoursay.tamworth.nsw.gov.au
