One of Moree’s busiest cafes, Brooker Trading Co, will be opening its doors for a very special morning coffee catchup on Saturday 15 June. In between the hours of 9am and 12pm Moree’s SES Unit will be hosting a “Sit and Sip” event and the whole community is welcome.
Emily Hunt, owner of Brooker Trading Co, said, “We’re really excited to be hosting this event.”
“A couple of the members of the local SES crew were down for coffee one day and they saw how busy it was and what a great meeting spot for the community the café is and so they approached us and asked if we’d be interested in letting them use some of our space for a bit of community engagement,” said Ms Hunt.
“The SES is such an important part of our community so for us it was just such a no brainer to say yes when they asked to use the space.”
Moree has been no stranger to natural disaster, with minor and major flooding wreaking havoc on the community multiple times in the last few years.
One of the primary objectives of the morning is for the SES to launce their new flood information resource for the region, which is a fridge magnet that helps locals understand flood heights and their consequences.
“The SES are going to be set up with a big table out the front all morning on the 15th – it’s really all about an opportunity for the community to come and have a chat and ask questions and interact with the SES,” said Ms Hunt.
“As a bonus, once you’ve had a bit of a chat with the SES, you’ll get a pass to come and redeem a free coffee from us.”
Moree SES has expressed a keen desire to recruit more people into their ranks. By volunteering with the SES there are opportunities for individuals to gain extra skills and qualifications, including a medium rigid truck license, first aid qualifications and a chainsaw operators’ ticket.
The SES is encouraging anyone interested in potentially volunteering their time in the future, to also come down and have a chat and ask questions about working with the SES at the Sit and Sip event.
