Moree gets ready for a full belly and itinerary with Moree on a Plate

Moree will again showcase its vibrant cultural and agricultural offerings next month as it hosts the annual Moree on a Plate Food Festival, alongside a series of exhibitions, performances, and tours.

The festival, which celebrates regional produce and community hospitality, will be held Saturday, May 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Moree Secondary College grounds. Cooking demonstrations by celebrity presenter Roberta Muir and a full schedule of entertainment are planned throughout the day.

Cultural activities will begin earlier in the week. The Moree Gallery will launch an exhibition on Thursday, May 8, featuring Sydney ceramicist Jennifer Newton and Melbourne artist Kirsty McIntyre. The exhibition opens at 10 a.m., with an evening reception scheduled from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Artwork will be available for viewing online and in person.

On Friday, May 9, internationally acclaimed pianist Simon Tedeschi will perform at the Bank Art Museum Moree (BAMM). The concert, which begins at 7 p.m., will include works by Schubert, Debussy, Chopin, and Gershwin. Tickets are available through BAMM’s website.

Yaama Ganu Gallery will also open a new exhibition during the festival weekend, featuring works by the Warlukurlangu Artists, known for their vibrant depictions of Tjukurpa and Country. The exhibition includes pieces by Karen Napaljarri Barnes and Julie Nangala Robertson, who won the 2023 NATSIAA General Painting Award.

For visitors interested in Indigenous culture, Yinarr-Ma Bush Tucker Tours will run a native foods tour on Saturday morning. Led by Gomeroi woman Kerrie Saunders, the tour offers insight into traditional uses of local plants.

Additional activities include cotton farm tours, organized through Moree Tourism, and visits to Moree’s artesian hot springs, known for their mineral-rich therapeutic waters. The town’s golf course, set along the Mehi River, will also be open to visitors.

The festival weekend concludes with a Mother’s Day lunch and live music at the Amaroo Tavern on Sunday, May 11.
