New England and North West communities to gather in the thousands to honour Anzac Day

The New England and North West region will turn out in their thousands to pay their respects on Anzac Day once again this year—from babies and toddlers in the crowds, to school children marching in uniform, through to veterans who continue to serve in recent conflicts and peacekeeping duties, and those who served decades ago in wars overseas.

Tamworth RSL Sub-Branch president David Howells said about 3000 people were expected to take part in the city’s Anzac Day march and tens of thousands expected in the crowd lining the streets from Marius Street through to Fitzroy Street.

“I think people have such a deep respect for Anzac Day and for what has preceded us,” Mr Howells said.

“It’s really magnificent to see the number of people who come out to commemorate.”

That respect is reflected in the number of school students taking part in services and marches across the region.

“It’s a pretty big highlight having the schools involved and seeing their respect,” Mr Howells said.

“It’s great to see the school students come out, put their uniforms on and march,” Mr Howells said.

Flyovers from Australian Defence Force aircraft are planned for several locations across the region, and Tamworth SES volunteers will again be helping to marshall march participants.

They will be carrying donation buckets to help raise money to assist local veterans, so dig deep.

The New England Times has a full rundown of services and marches across the region below.
