Glen Food Hub will host a very special new Mother’s Day Celebration on Tuesday, May 13. Held at the Glen Innes Community Centre from 10 am to 12pm, the event will feature a scrumptious high tea and a showcase of some of the community’s most prized possessions – their wedding dresses!
Mary Hollingworth is one of the event organisers. She said, “We have held multiple fundraising events and morning teas in the past, but this is a very new concept for us.”
“We’re very excited about the morning, though, and we’re very hopeful that it will not only be a success but also something that we can make an annual and fringe event to the Celtic Festival.”
The morning aims to celebrate motherhood and local mothers and showcase the work of the Glen Food Hub.
Glen Food Hub is a community organisation sponsored by the Glen Innes Seventh-day Adventist Church. It opens every Thursday from 11 am to 3 pm. It offers affordable, nutritious food and grocery items to community members in need.
Tickets for the morning tea are $10 per person, and all proceeds will go towards Glen Food Hub.
“Glen Food Hub has been active in the Glen Innes community for 10 years. We run entirely on volunteers, and so we really wanted this event to be about celebrating all mothers and mother figures in our community and to highlight the brilliant work that our volunteers do,” said Ms Hollingworth.
“We also wanted to make sure that, as a community event, our Bridal Showcase morning tea is affordable and accessible to all.”
“The community centre is a fantastic accessible venue, and the $10 entry fee will cover morning tea, a guest speaker and a gift bag, and the chance to see our beautiful bridal showcase fashion parade.”
All wedding dresses on show on the day belong to local women and will range across eras. The dresses will be modelled by either the original wearer or a model. If you’ve got a dress to showcase, Ms Hollingworth says they are still open to applications for more gowns to display on the day.
“We want dresses of all shapes and sizes,” she said.
“From jumpsuits to lace extravaganzas, family heirlooms to simple day dresses -we want to see them all!”
Even Ms Hollingworth herself will be modelling on the day.
“I have got my own wedding dress out from 42 years ago – it’s very much a Princess Di style, and I’m glad to say I can still fit into it.”
They are also keen to show examples of Mother-of-the-Bride and bridesmaids’ fashion, so if you’ve got something lurking in your wardrobe that you’d be happy to share in the morning, Mary encourages you to reach out.
Bookings for the morning tea are open now, and RSVPs are vital.
“Please do reach out if you’re planning on coming, as we need RSVPs a week before the event so that we can finalise all our catering,” said Ms Hollingworth.
“We will have an official event flyer out later this week with further information.”
