In support of Youth Homelessness Matters Day on April 16th, Pathfinders Youth Homelessness Support Service will be hosting an event at the Armidale Central Plaza from 9AM to 3PM.
This important event aims to raise awareness about youth homelessness and provide valuable information on local community support services that assist young people experiencing homelessness and those at risk of homelessness.
“We are calling on the government to allocate more resources to homelessness services, as many of these services are stretched to their limits,” said Karina Wight, Pathfinders Armidale, SHS Coordinator.
“Over 43,000 children and young people under the age of 25 presented alone to a homelessness service in 2023–2024. Unfortunately, due to a lack of capacity, many were turned away, including those in desperate need of both short- and long-term accommodation.”
Youth Homelessness Matters Day is a nationwide initiative aimed at highlighting the significant challenges faced by young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
To add to the impact, Pathfinders is also calling on governments to show their support for these crucial services through a petition that will be available at the event.
“Almost half of the young people seeking support have experienced mental health issues, and over one-third had experienced domestic and family violence,” Karina continued.
“We need to come together as a community to ensure that these young people are not left behind. Come down and see us, show your support, and please sign the petition.”
