It’s full steam ahead on four legs and one hump as camel racing makes a triumphant return to the Gunnedah Show this Saturday, April 5.

After a being a hit last year, the much-loved camel races are back this weekend and the desert ships are set to steal the spotlight.

With four races and a grand final on the cards, the Showground is primed for a day of hilarious hijinks, wobbly jockeys, and unpredictable camel chaos.

Gunnedah Show Vice-President Caroline Mitchell says it’s a crowd favourite making a welcome return.

Two races will follow the official opening, about 2.30pm, then other events will be on before the camels race again with the final held at about 4.30pm-5pm

“They were quite the success last year,” Caroline said.

“So, we’re giving them another run.”

And if you think it’s all about seasoned pros and camel whisperers, think again. This year’s celebrity camel race promises to be a must-see spectacle, with local identities bravely stepping up to the challenge. Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson will be swapping politics for the paddock, lining up alongside Gunnedah Times’ Sam Woods and Gunnedah Showgirl Chennelle Winsor.

“It’s a bit of fun,” Caroline said.

“You don’t need to be a horse rider to ride a camel – it’s a completely different skill set. It’s just a bit of fun”

The camels, visiting from the NSW Central Coast, are more accustomed to the beach than the bush, bringing a chilled-out, sun-soaked attitude to the show. Whether they’ll be in a racing mood or just here for a stroll is anybody’s guess.

“It’s all very laidback,” Caroline said.

“People love the silliness of it all. It’s also great having locals riding because that makes it more interesting.”

So, if you’re heading to the Gunnedah Show this Saturday, be sure to grab a spot before 2.30pm ready to see the ships of the desert racing.
