for International Women’s Day
An exhibition celebrating gold-medal winning Australian Olympian, Armidale’s own Dr Kathleen Partridge will be on display in Armidale Regional Council’s foyer art space in time for International Women’s Day 2025.
A collection of items highlighting Kathy’s achievements and her contributions to our community will be displayed from this week.
“The team at Armidale Folk Museum have been proud to work alongside the Partridge family as plans for this display developed,” said Sarah Reddington, Council’s Manager Community Services.
“International Women’s Day provided a catalyst, but the opportunity to showcase this local woman and her achievements is one we would have embraced at any time of the year!”
Armidale locals may recognise the Kathy Partridge name from ‘Kathy Partridge Oval’ on Dumaresq Street.
Goalkeeper Kathleen Partridge enjoyed her finest moment in sport when she won a gold medal with the Hockeyroos at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. As well as being an integral part of the team, Kathy was a respected leader who served as vice-captain when the Hockeyroos competed at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992.
She focused more on coaching after 1992 and became one of the most astute goalkeeping coaches in the world – coaching staff of the Hockeyroos’ gold medal teams in 1996 and 2000. Kathy also wrote a book about playing as a keeper.
Sadly, Kathy Partridge died from cancer in 2021. She was only 57.
“People who knew and loved Kathy remember her as someone who brought a positive energy and influence to those around her,” said Ms Reddington.
“This exhibition is a showcase and celebration of Kathy’s impressive achievements, and we hope that this small tribute helps to ensure that her legacy and impact is remembered in our community.”
Exhibited objects are original and have been loaned to Armidale Folk Museum by relatives of Kathy Partridge. Another of Kathy’s Olympic uniforms is on display at Armidale Folk Museum.
Council is grateful for NSW Government funding via Create NSW that enabled the purchase of Armidale Folk Museum display cabinets.
The Council Administration Building foyer is open Monday to Friday 9am – 4pm.
