Kamilaroi Highway closed in both directions at Gunnedah after fatal crash

A critical incident investigation is underway after a motorcyclist died following a pursuit with a stolen vehicle in the state’s north today.

About 7.15am, (Tuesday 28 January 2025), officers attached to Traffic and Highway Patrol attempted to stop a Isuzu D-Max utility – reportedly stolen from Moree home earlier this morning – on the Oxley Highway at Carroll, east of Gunnedah.

The Isuzu failed to stop, and a pursuit was initiated travelling towards Gunnedah.

On the Kamilaroi Highway at Gunnedah, the Isuzu collided with a motorcycle.

The motorcycle rider was critically injured. He was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics; however, he was unable to be revived and died at the scene. The man has not been formally identified.

Three occupants of the Isuzu, all aged 14, have been arrested and taken to Tamworth Police Station.

A crime scene has been established with local road closures in place. All vehicles up to 4.6m height are being diverted via Warrabungle St, Oxley Hwy, Farrar Rd, Ross Rd and Quia Rd in both directions. There is a 4.6m clearance at the rail overbridge on Quia Rd.

A critical incident investigation team from Orana-Mid Western Police District will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The investigation is also subject to an independent review.
