The 2025 Australia Day celebrations in Moree Plains kicked off with a heartwarming ceremony as five new citizens from Canada, New Zealand, and India were welcomed into the community.
“I am excited for what this means for our community, as we welcome new faces, new ideas, and new passions,” Mayor Susannah Pearse said.
“To our new citizens today, thank you for choosing to call the Moree Plains home. We are honoured to have you.”
The ceremony also saw the recognition of several local heroes at the 2025 Moree Plains Australia Day Awards, celebrating their selflessness and dedication to the community.
Citizen of the Year – Darryl Brady
Darryl Brady, a stalwart of the Moree community, was honoured with the Citizen of the Year award for his tireless contributions across various roles. As Treasurer of the Moree RSL Sub-Branch, a member of the Moree Regional Military Museum, and an active volunteer with the Moree Rural Fire Service, Darryl’s impact is immeasurable. In 2023 alone, he responded to 450 callouts with the Rural Fire Service, often juggling multiple emergencies on the same day.
Darryl also volunteers for the Moree Boars Rugby League Club, the Moree Show, and Legacy Week. His efforts in fundraising have made a significant difference, and he even brightens the mornings of Whiddon residents by delivering newspapers.
“He’s always there for those in need, whether mowing lawns, moving items, or offering assistance without being asked,” said Mayor Pearse.
Despite his heavy responsibilities at home caring for his adult son, Darryl continues to give back, making him a true embodiment of community spirit.
Volunteer of the Year – Peter Winkley
Peter Winkley was named Volunteer of the Year for his dedication to a wide range of community services in Moree. From being the unpaid caretaker of the rugby union club and maintaining the local golf course to coaching the women’s rugby team, Peter’s contributions are both varied and invaluable.
Sports Person of the Year – Eric Dumas
Though unable to attend, Eric Dumas was honoured for his extraordinary achievements in powerlifting throughout 2024. His impressive record includes being crowned World Masters M3/105kg Powerlifting Champion in South Africa, and Commonwealth Masters M3/105kg Powerlifting Champion. Eric shattered records across multiple categories, leaving an indelible mark on the sport and inspiring others in the community to pursue excellence.
Young Sportsperson of the Year – Kate McDonald
At just 12 years old, Kate McDonald has already made waves in athletics, cross country, equestrian, and swimming. With achievements including top finishes at state and national levels and setting multiple local records, Kate is a young athlete to watch. Her remarkable talent and humility earned her the 2024 Primary Schools Sport Association Sports Person of the Year – Moree Zone Award.
Community/Volunteer Group of the Year – Life House Pantry Moree
The Life House Pantry Moree received the Community/Volunteer Group of the Year award for their ongoing commitment to supporting locals in need. Through their food pantry, clothing and furniture donations, and special holiday programs, Life House Pantry has become a vital resource for the community. Their compassion, confidentiality, and willingness to step up in times of crisis make them a cornerstone of Moree’s spirit of giving.
Community Event of the Year – Run the Plains
The Run the Plains event, held in September 2024, was recognised as Community Event of the Year. This multi-race event brought together participants of all ages and abilities, promoting health, fitness, and inclusivity while showcasing the natural beauty of Moree. Over 345 entrants competed in races ranging from 1km to 36km, with funds raised for mental health awareness through the charity Steps 4 Strength.
Australia Day Mayor’s Award – Elizabeth “Beth” Hearn
Elizabeth Hearn, affectionately known as Beth, was presented with the Australia Day Mayor’s Award for her decades-long service to the Moree Lions Club. Beth’s tireless work has impacted numerous community initiatives, from organising the Moree Markets to helping individuals in need. Her selflessness, including a recent act of kindness in assisting a homeless young woman, has earned her widespread admiration.
The event, held at Jellicoe Park and sponsored by Moree Plains Shire Council, concluded with a free BBQ breakfast provided by the Moree Lions Club and live music by Rachel Cubis.
