Devastating news for the Glen Innes Jockey Club arrived early Saturday morning as race officials walked the 1400m track, declaring it “unfit for race day”. After more than four inches of rain and hailstones ranging in size between golf and tennis balls fell in the 24 hours prior to race day, the section of track between 1000 and 1200m was considered too wet for races to proceed safely.

The news was disappointing for the staff, stewards, owners and committee members of the GIJC, who spent the last 12 months building upon 2024’s record-breaking race day to create an even bigger and busier 2025 event. To invest so much time and money into their annual race, only to have it dashed mere hours ahead of gates opening was crushing.

“There was four inches of rain, plus hail which sat on the track and melted overnight, turning the topsoil to mush and tearing up the grass. The storm was so violent, opening up right over our racecourse: It picked up a 6T barrier and threw it across two fences, which then knocked down another tree.” said Chairman of the Glen Innes Jockey Club Mark Ritchie.

“We’ve invested so much in the turf out here over the last few years, but in reality there’s not a club in Australia which could have withstood the barrage we faced on Friday night.”

But all was not lost. While the races were cancelled, the rest of the day went ahead without a hitch and even the clouds remained at bay, allowing a thousand attendees to make the most of their Saturdays.

“The committee was devastated by the decision to call off the races, but the community response the next day was fantastic, with over a thousand punters learning they can still have a great day without racing.” said Ritchie.

The biggest highlight of the day – arguably bigger than even the races would have been – was the WIN Television Fashions on the Field event. Seventy entrants ranging in age from 2 to 75 donned their finest frocks, their sharpest suits, to compete against one another for the title of Best on Field.

Competition was tight in the mens, womens and couples open categories. Egged on by MC Shad Bailey, crowd and judges alike were given the unenviable task of crowning an eventual winner.

Judging was provided by Sydney fashion designers and influencers Amy Gerard, Virginie Pepin and Lauren Gocher, who descended upon the town of Glen Innes for the weekend. Bringing their signature brands of flair and funtimes to the judging table.

“The Fashions on the Field were amazing and judging them was no easy task: Everyone was a winner in my eyes.” said Amy.

Amy was also impressed by the day itself.

“The people, the fresh air, the music… The country. What a vibe. I loved every second of it and we’ll be back next year with our partners!” said Amy.

The hottest competition in Fashions on the Field came in the Women’s Open Category.
