Police have commenced a critical incident investigation after a teen crashed into a parked car in West Tamworth around 3:50am this morning, Friday, January 3.

Police were patrolling the West Tamworth area, when they stopped an 18 year old riding a motorbike on a footbridge off Gipps Street.

Police allege that the rider resisted arrest, prompting officers to deploy pepper spray, in which the teen tried to flee, crashing into a parked car nearby.

The rider was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics at the scene before being taken to Tamworth Hospital in a critical condition.

He has later airlifted to John Hunter Hospital for further treatment.

Police have established a crime scene and a critical incident investigation team from Central North Police District have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The investigation will be subject to an independent review.
