As we all begin to celebrate the new year, NSW RSPCA is reminding pet owners to help keep our furry friends safe during firework displays this festive season.

“New Year’s Eve can be a scary time for our pets. That loud, unpredictable sound of the fireworks can cause anxiety right up to real fear and panic in our dogs.” said Dr. Liz Arnott, RSPCA NSW Chief Veterinarian.

Here are some tip to help keep you and your pet’s new year’s eve night more enjoyable:

  • Provide access to a safe place in the house
  • Provide calm reassurance: they may like to hide under the bed.
  • Reduce the impact of the noise by pulling the curtains, play some calming background music and consider accessing some canine pheromones that can feel quite calming to animals

“Do be prepared by having your microchip details up to date. If your pet escapes, that’s really crucial for you to be reunited. Finally, if you know your dog has real panic during fireworks, it’s important to talk to your vet.” said Dr Arnott.

“There are situational medications that can make a real difference to keeping them calm at this time of year.”
