The kids are in for a treat this summer, with the NSW Government’s Holiday Break program offering over 800 free activities to keep them engaged, entertained, and connected. This initiative aims to provide regional youth with enriching and educational experiences that are fun, active, and accessible, ensuring that young people can enjoy their holidays without financial barriers.
The Holiday Break program, which runs throughout the summer and autumn school holidays, is designed to break down access barriers for young people in regional communities. From sports and creative workshops to outdoor adventures, this exciting lineup of activities promises to cater to a wide range of interests, allowing youth to try new things, develop new skills, and meet new friends.
Jessica Blair, Club Manager at PCYC Gunnedah, highlighted the importance of such programs for regional communities.
“PCYC Broken Hill and PCYC Gunnedah’s Holiday Break program is specifically designed to address the unique needs of young people in regional areas.
“For many young people in these communities, school holidays can be a time of isolation, with limited recreational options available,” she said.
From the Rotaract Club of Wee Waa hosting laser tag games on 28 December 2024 to Baan Baa Community Hall offering tennis clinics in mid-January, there are plenty of activities will provide local youth with fun and educational opportunities close to home.
Gunnedah Shire Library will hold its well-loved Book Buddies and Crafty Creations sessions. Book Buddies is a great free storytime and craft session for 0-7 year-olds, while Crafty Creations keeps children from 7-12 busy with activities and handicrafts for just $3 per participant.
Other activities include the free Epic Cupcake Decorating Workshop on Monday, 13 January where kids can learn cool decorating techniques and create great cupcake designs.
Two free art sessions with Jade Punch – Mixed Medium Art with Jade on Wednesday, 15 January and Print Making Art with Jade on Wednesday, 22 January – will encourage children to discover their creativity in a two-hour workshop.
There will be a free Fitness and Yoga Workshop for young people aged 12-24 at Gunnedah Health & Fitness Co on Friday, 17 January.
For those in Walcha, the Summer Splash Sessions will take place on 7 January, 15 January, and 25 January 2025 at the Walcha Memorial Pools, promising a fun and active way to cool off during the hot summer days.
For those interested in sports, the Armidale Junior Rugby Club will be hosting their Rugby For Good School Holiday Clinic & Games Day, while Guyra Junior Rugby League will provide a range of activities including a fishing day at Deano’s Trout Farm and BBQ events to promote mental health and community connection.
In addition to physical activities, the program also includes a variety of cultural experiences. One such opportunity is the Gungyah Ngallingnee Aboriginal Corporation’s swimming and cultural outings, where children will be able to learn about water safety, swimming, and Aboriginal culture while having fun. Similarly, Glen Innes Pottery Club is offering pottery, sculpture, and jewellery-making workshops for youth aged 12-24, allowing them to explore their creativity and develop new artistic skills.
Gunnedah Shire Council Manager Economy & Growth Susan Frater said school holiday activities were a great way to keep children entertained over the summer holidays.
“We have a number of very varied free activities in our program to suit kids who have all sorts of interests,” Mrs Frater said.
“There are a few other activities that children can do at any time – they just have to pop along to the Civic Theatre to find out how to participate. There’s a Furry Frenzy Seek and Find and Town Bus Bingo.
“Of course, the Gunnedah Memorial Pool is also a great way to cool off, and it’s open every day except Christmas Day.”
