As Christmas approaches, the need for support among vulnerable Australians grows, with thousands facing homelessness and financial hardship. In response, the Salvation Army is again calling on the local community to help provide assistance through its Christmas Appeal.

Major Wendy-Sue Swan from the Salvation Army in Inverell said the charity’s local initiatives are essential in providing relief to those in need.

“We try to help as many people as possible throughout the year, but Christmas is a particularly challenging time,” Swan said.

“We offer services such as emergency relief, low-cost food markets, and a laundry, shower, and breakfast program to ensure those in need have access to basic necessities.”

The Salvation Army’s programs in Inverell include:

  • Emergency Relief Days: Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:30am to 12pm, providing food, clothing, and other assistance.
  • No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS): Offering interest-free loans to help individuals manage essential expenses.
  • Laundry, Shower & Breakfast Program (LSB): Running Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8am to 9am, providing a place for people to access showers, laundry facilities, and a hot breakfast, or simply enjoy some company.
  • Food Market Day: Wednesdays from 10am to 1pm, offering low-cost food and other essentials to those in need.

Local Ashford farmer Mal Peters, who is chairing the Inverell District Red Shield Appeal, has been actively involved in the campaign for several years. Peter said the appeal has become an important way to give back to the community.

“We’re focused on ensuring that every dollar donated stays within the local community and directly supports those who need it most.”

“This Christmas, every contribution, big or small, will make a real difference in the lives of those who are struggling.”

Swan encouraged locals to support the appeal by donating either in person or online.

“We are looking for donations of new toys for children of all ages, as well as long-life or tin food products,” she said.

“Your generosity can help ensure that families in Inverell have a much-needed Christmas.”

Donations can be made online at https://www.salvationarmy.org.au/, by calling 137258, or directly to the Salvation Army in Inverell at 35 Vivian Street.
