This December is shaping up to be a bumper graduation season, with our two major institutions preparing to celebrate their students’ achievements this week and next.
The University of New England (UNE) is set to host more than 700 students walking across the stage for Summer Graduation. Over 1,750 guests are expected to gather on the lawns at Bool from Thursday 5 to Saturday 7 December to cheer on the students during three ceremonies.
This year’s graduation will feature some notable addresses, with Nobel Prize-winning cosmologist Professor Brian Schmidt from the Australian National University delivering the keynote speech for the Faculty of Science, Agriculture, Business and Law (SABL). Professor Schmidt, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2011, is renowned internationally for his work in the field of cosmology.
The Medicine and Health ceremony will see UNE SRI Founder Edwina Sharrock OAM take the stage. A passionate midwife, entrepreneur, and health advocate, Edwina founded Birth Beat, a digital health platform for new and expecting parents. Meanwhile, Timothy Walker CBE AM, a UNE graduate and former Chief Executive and Artistic Director of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, will address students from the Faculty of Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences and Education (HASSE).
Not to be outdone, the University of Newcastle is gearing up for its biggest ever graduation celebration. From Thursday 12 to Wednesday 18 December, the Great Hall at the Callaghan campus will host over 3,700 graduates across 13 ceremonies. This milestone will mark an extraordinary achievement for the students who are taking the next step in their careers and futures.
All the graduation ceremonies can be watched online for those who are unable to attend.
UNE Graduation Ceremonies can be viewed live via UNE Facebook and UNE YouTube on the day of the event.
