The Hunter New England and Central Coast Primary Health Network (HNECC PHN) is pioneering digital health innovation in rural Australia with the launch of the nation’s first Gen 2 SiSU Mini Health Station at Timbs Pharmacy in Glen Innes.

This installation marks a significant step towards enhancing access to preventive health services in the region, aimed at improving health outcomes for the Glen Innes community.

Rural and remote Australians face unique health challenges, including lower life expectancies, higher rates of chronic diseases, and limited access to healthcare services compared to urban populations. Notably, the New England region has consistently reported poorer health outcomes relative to both New South Wales and national averages.

HNECC PHN Chief Executive Officer Richard Nankervis stated, “Our long-standing commitment to Glen Innes, a community that has historically faced healthcare limitations, drives this project forward. By introducing this innovative digital health solution, we are actively addressing the health disparities faced by rural communities.”

Timbs Pharmacy, a trusted community institution, is ideally positioned to host the SiSU Mini Health Station. This collaboration will integrate preventive health checks into everyday life, making it easier for residents to access vital health information.

The Gen 2 SiSU Mini Health Station aims to achieve three key outcomes:

  1. Improved Access to Preventive Health: The SiSU Mini Health Station offers residents a convenient, free way to monitor their health. In just four minutes, users can measure essential health indicators, including weight, body composition, blood pressure, and heart rate. This self-service approach empowers individuals to regularly track their health between routine check-ups.
  2. Early Detection and Intervention: By providing on-demand health screenings, the Mini Health Station facilitates early identification of potential health issues. This proactive approach allows residents to seek timely medical advice and intervention, which can significantly enhance long-term health outcomes.
  3. Increased Health Literacy: The SiSU Mini Health Station also aims to elevate health awareness within the community. With easy access to health data and personalised health reports via the SiSU Health mobile app, residents are encouraged to take charge of their health and engage in proactive wellness management.

The Health Station will recommend that individuals with elevated results consult a GP or pharmacist for further assessment. Healthcare providers can then propose personalised interventions, including lifestyle changes, exercise plans, or medications, to address specific health risks such as heart disease.

This initiative underscores HNECC PHN’s commitment to improving healthcare access in rural areas through innovative solutions tailored to community needs. By combining the trusted presence of a local pharmacy with advanced digital health technology, Glen Innes residents can gain greater control over their health, leading to improved long-term outcomes.
