October is Small Business Month! And to celebrate, we’re highlighting some of the great small businesses we have throughout the region.
Today we have three businesses who are among the New England’s most well loved: an iconic country pub, damn good coffee, and a building full of unique awesomeness.
Walcha Road Hotel 🖥️
The historic Walcha Road Hotel has new owners, and is now under the expert guidance of Austrian-born chef Bernhard Kerschbaumer.
Bernhard, passionate about authentic flavours, prepares everything from scratch, serving up favourites like chicken schnitzel, Wiener schnitzel, and his delightful apple strudel. The cosy pub, located conveniently opposite the Walcha Road Train Station, offers an inviting atmosphere to relax and unwind with both local and imported beers on tap, including a selection of German brews.
Open for lunch Friday through Saturday and dinner Wednesday through Sunday, the Walcha Road Hotel is the perfect spot to enjoy a delicious meal or simply stop in for a drink. Visit soon to experience the warm hospitality and fantastic food of the Walcha Road Hotel.
The Alternate Root 🖥️
Situated in friendly Uralla, New South Wales, in the historical ‘Trikett’s’ building, is where you’ll find our bustling flagship cafe.
Berdine Warne and Andy Neary co-own the business and they run it along with a fantastic team.
The Alternate Root are known for the love, care and attention to detail that is put into our food and coffee and our regulars have come to expect the efficient and friendly service that our wonderful team offers. We would love all our customers to feel like they have entered our home, to feel comfortable and to be able to relax, unwind and let us take care of them for a while.
As well as running a busy breakfast and lunch trade seven days a week, Friday and Saturday night dinners have proven to be very popular and locals have also come to look forward to public, evening events such as trivia, theme nights, live music and open mic nights.
You’ll find our sister cafe at the Armidale Airport complex but you don’t need to have packed your bags to visit us here. Whether you are exploring, passing through, meeting friends or plane watching, we’ll be here serving you the same high standard of coffee, drinks, food and smiles.
As a business, we value the importance of community and supporting local – whether it be our commitment to sourcing local ingredients where possible, supporting local musicians, artists and artisan suppliers, or being part of a wider community effort to help protect our environment through applying sustainable practices in house.

thebigblackbuilding 🖥️
thebigblackbuilding (aka The Big Black Building, the BBB, and the Big Black Shed) is a retail emporium of antique, vintage, second hand and collectible awesomeness. Located in the New England at the crossroads of the Thunderbolts Way and the Oxley Highway in Walcha NSW, thebigblackbuilding is hard to miss (as it’s a big black building).
Adam Iuston, the owner of the BBB, is an ex-Sydney boy who chose Walcha as his new home and decided to start, “…the most awesome and sustainable business in the universe”.
The shop has something for everyone. It’s a tourist destination and a collectibles mini mall with coffee. Don’t expect to have a quick look, it takes at least an hour to see the entire shop…
