TAS has announced the appointment of their new Principal will be Ray Pearson, who has been Deputy since 2022.

Mr Pearson was selected following a rigorous process conducted in conjunction with leading international recruitment firm Odgers Berndtson. Strong applicants from across the country were interviewed for the role, testament to the reputation of TAS around Australia. Mr Pearson’s appointment comes into effect immediately.

Mr Pearson came to TAS in January 2022 from St Peter’s College, Adelaide, where he had been Director of Boarding and Deputy Head of Senior School (Students and Boarding). He was previously at Toowoomba Grammar School and Townsville Grammar School. Born in Moranbah, Central Queensland, he gained a Bachelor of Education and a Masters of Education (Leadership and Management) from the University of Southern Queensland. His three children are all students in TAS Junior School.

In making the formal announcement today, Chairman of the TAS Board, Mr Sebastian Hempel, said he was absolutely delighted that Mr Pearson had accepted the role and he would bring both lived experience of the TAS community and fresh perspectives of opportunity to the position.

“Ray has demonstrated throughout his career and his time at TAS as Deputy Principal, sound leadership skills, genuine care for all his students, and a collaborative approach to working with teachers, staff, parents, and the wider community,” Mr Hempel said.

“Through the extensive interview process, it was evident that he understands our unique culture, our rich history, and our exceptional close-knit School community.”

“We are confident that his leadership will contribute significantly to the continued growth and development of our Anglican school, in all areas.”

Mr Hempel said Mr Pearson was ideally placed to build on the work of outgoing Principal Dr Rachel Horton, who he again thanked for her contribution to TAS. Dr Horton left her role at the end of last month after announcing her resignation in April. Mr Pearson has been acting Principal since October 1.

“The Board is confident that Ray’s deep understanding of TAS values will maintain the momentum built under Rachel’s leadership, ensuring stability and continuity for our community whilst his leadership will contribute enormously to renewing the School’s strategic plan.”

Mr Pearson said he was “incredibly honoured and proud” to be appointed to the role.

“We have a fantastic offering that provides broad opportunities for our students across the co-curricular space and within academics.

“I see so many opportunities to enhance the offering at TAS and I am excited about the timing of creating a new strategic plan to take us through the next five years and beyond.”

“I want TAS to be the pre-eminent regional boarding school and I know we have the people and passion to achieve this,” he said.
