Artificial intelligence is everywhere and increasingly being used in all aspects of our lives. For the media industry, it is causing a major disruption: just as the introduction of the internet upended how content is delivered, AI is now upending how content is created.

ABC Friends Northern Tablelands will host a public presentation on AI and the media next Tuesday night. Dr. Rob Nicholls, a senior research associate at the University of Sydney and an expert in artificial intelligence (AI) and its implications for media, will discuss the current landscape of AI technologies, their effects on journalism and broadcasting, and future trends.

Dr. Nicholls served as Australia’s Independent Telecommunications Adjudicator from 2012 to 2020, and he currently advises regulatory bodies and government officials both in Australia and internationally. His research focuses on the intersection of technology and regulation, and he provides regulatory and policy advice to the Association for Data-driven Marketing and Advertising.

Emeritus Professor Brian Byrne, convenor of ABC Friends Northern Tablelands, said the discussion will interest anyone concerned about AI and its potential impact on journalism, broadcasting, and society at large.

“Each year the Northern Tablelands branch of ABC Friends hosts a public presentation on a topic relevant to the media.”

“This year we are privileged to have as our speaker an eminent academic with a background in technical aspects of AI and in its impact on the media, combined with experience in legal and regulatory issues.”

Dr. Nicholls will explore the various forms of AI, such as machine learning and natural language processing, and how these technologies are reshaping the media landscape. His expertise extends to providing commentary for media outlets and participating as an expert witness in federal court proceedings.

“This is a critical time for discussions around AI’s ethical implications and its transformative effects on media practices,” Byrne added. “We are privileged to have such an eminent academic with us this year.”

The event promises to be an insightful evening for anyone interested in understanding the complexities of AI and its role in the future of media.

on Tuesday, October 1, at 6:15 PM at The Playhouse in Armidale. The event is free to the public, with no booking necessary, and drinks will be available at the bar. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early to secure seating.
