No group tickets and just seven councillors to be elected, Jack Parry is the only councillor not to renominate, so it’s likely to be business as usual in Glen Innes.
More than eighty locals gathered at the Glen Innes Services Club last week to hear what the town’s local councillors will offer their constituency if they are elected.
With introductions focused mainly on candidates’ heritage and experience, the microphones were then given to members of the community who were given the chance to pepper the candidates with their most pressing concerns.
Lively discussion followed and, unsurprisingly, the first question asked for a show of hands about the hottest topic in town: The Rail Trail, with candidates split 5 to 4 on support for versus against the Trail. A topic that was returned to throughout the night, candidates were given the chance to express their views multiple times.
The next hottest topic was that of growth and how Glen Innes can grow. With doctors coming at a premium not just in Glen Innes but around regional Australia, many questions were aimed at how health in the town can be improved.
Other topics on the night included local business, youth, community welfare, safety and of course, roads.
