Armidale’s council will reduce from 11 to 9 councillors this election, and 39 candidates are on the crowded ballot.

Cr Paul Packham has not renominated, while Cr Jon Galletely is in an unwinnable position of last on current Mayor Sam Coupland’s ticket, which has Todd Redwood and Paul Gaddes at 2 and 3. Debra O’Brien is also not likely to get elected from the third spot on the Labor ticket, making way for Caroline Chapman in position 2, which Susan McMichael is assured another term in first spot.

Notable challengers include some old hands having another run in the form of Rob Taber and Rob Richardson, both of whom should pull some votes on name recognition if nothing else.

Brad Widders continues to make his mark in his own way, the only incumbent not in a group ticket, while Josh Fittler, Jenny Wild, and Madan Narayanamurthy in the ungrouped column all have supporters.

The outlier in the ungrouped column is Natasha Ledger, who is currently facing charges of common assault and domestic violence and failed to get a gag order to prevent voters finding out about it. It’s not the first time Ledger has campaigned for office with an active DV matter (where she was the aggressor) on foot – similar allegations were around when she ran against Barnaby Joyce in the federal seat of New England in 2019. She may know the outcome of her court case before the election, with the matter to proceed on Friday.

Reports are that this campaign has been particularly nasty as local council election campaigns go, flowing on, no doubt, from the bitter disputes and bullying frequently on display in recent council meetings. The rail trail issue is now out of Council hands but dominates the campaign noise, with the Groups C, E and F tickets being pro-rail campaigners, opposing the pro-rail trail Group D ticket led by Mayor Sam Coupland.

It is an ideological game of mix and match however, with Groups C and and F opposing renewable developments – Group C leader Eli Imad even resorting to absurd false claims and deplorable fearmongering as his preferred campaign tactic – while former federal independent candidate and New England Solar business owner Rob Taber, who heads Group E, is one of the longest standing advocates for renewables in the region.

Racism and other bigotry has also been an element of the campaign, with some of the (many) older candidates using terminology that is no longer considered acceptable, and other incidents, particularly on social media, that are more challenging to excuse. Bruce Newberry on Margaret O’Connor’s ticket (Group F) has posted some particularly objectionable content.

I have been your voice on Council since 2021. I am a family support worker and enjoy volunteering with various local community organisations including the Neighbourhood Centre, Uniting Church and ANTAR. I have been a community and volunteer worker for over 20 years moving to Armidale to study at the University of New England in the mid 1980s and have remained in the city I love ever since.

Most important issue
Lack of childcare in a community impacts a number of sectors including health and education. It also impacts on the ability of others to relocate to our region to work. Armidale Regional Council currently owns and operates the Guyra Preschool and Long Daycare, and is working with other providers to boost childcare spots in our communities. In addition, council is connecting with other levels of government, in their goal to increase the number of childcare places and centres. This important work needs to be given a high priority in the next council term. Access to childcare is a vital requirement for working families in our communities and apart from attracting more working families to our region, can directly improve our resident’s quality of life.

Vote for me because…
I am an experienced councillor with a passion for improving our communities. One of my priorities is to see housing increase through the workings of the Armidale Regional Council’s Local Housing Strategy. I will continue to be an advocate for all sectors in our Local Government Area. My involvement with the Council’s health committee has been rewarding, overseeing an initial migration of doctors to our LGA. As a school teacher, I have worked at schools in both Armidale and Guyra. Wife to Stephen and mother to Patrick, I am an active member of the community, through the Armidale Eisteddfod committee, involvement in local choirs and volunteering for the St Vincent de Paul. I believe that councils should represent all communities in an LGA and we will be the voice for those who are not always heard.

Most important issue
Armidale used to have a functional hydrotherapy pool. Unfortunately the previous State Government declined to refurbish the aging pool, so the task of building a new facility is now a role of Armidale Regional Council. To attract medical specialists to our Local Government Area, we need adequate rehab facilities. People with a variety of medical conditions benefit from hydrotherapy and if the pool is incorporated into the Monkton Aquatic Centre, we could attract people from neighbouring communities to use the facility, boosting our economy as a side benefit. A hydrotherapy pool would go a long way to increase the quality of life of so many residents in our LGA.

Vote for me because…
I am a team player, enjoy problem solving with others and have been interested in local government for many years. Passionate about increasing our childcare capacity in our Local Government Area, I will work side by side with fellow councillors if elected, to find a way forward for the Guyra preschool and long daycare centre and assist in facilitating a boost to childcare places in our LGA through supporting the methods council is undertaking to solve the problem of the current shortage. Water security will also be a priority for me and the decision making process that the new council will be involved in with be important for the long term future of our communities. I believe that councils should represent all communities in an LGA and we will be the voice for those who are not always heard.

I’ve lived in Armidale for over 30 years, enjoying a career in agricultural research, genetics and reducing greenhouse emissions from livestock. Initially, I rented an almost new home unit – the warmest place in winter was outside on the veranda. Inside, it felt colder than many houses in the north of Scotland! I therefore took advantage of the opportunity to build a house more suited to the New England climate and was surprised by how much difference low-cost measures like insulation and north-facing living areas made, both to heating bills and enjoying our wonderful warm sunny winter days.

My interest in local politics stems from the major impact of local government on a quality of life. We face considerable challenges. Global warming threatens our water security, our agricultural productivity and our children’s future. We need a council that understands the importance of local government on quality of life, climate action, planning for sustainable growth, energy efficiency, meaningful community consultation and wise use of public resources.

Most important issue
Most important are cost of living and quality of life. Council can help by negotiating low-cost renewable energy deals as part of their Renewable Energy Zone benefit schemes and encouraging affordable, energy-efficient housing. These initiatives will help reduce electricity bills, as will advice on energy efficiency and ensuring efficiency rebates are as easy to access in our region as they are in larger cities.

Fair rates and water charges (ensuring residents do not subsidize intensive water use and questioning the need for a 3rd instalment of the 3-year special rates increase) will help residents make ends meet, thereby reducing disadvantage and helping to create a fairer, more equitable society.

Listening to the community is a good way for Council to reduce costs and improve services, so that they meet our most important needs. Deploying user-friendly software to report problems and see Council’s responses would encourage residents to share their ideas with Council and the community.

Council can also help by ensuring residents do not subsidize intensive water use. Councillors were told in June about the cost-blow outs for the Oaky pipeline. A priority should be to conduct the public consultation on willingness-to-pay, originally scheduled for September 2022. It is hard to believe that many residents will want to pay almost twice as much for water to subsidise intensive water users, if other levels of government do not pay 90% of the cost. A better option would be to use current consumption to estimate our needs, compared to the secure yield after raising Malpas, rather than paying millions of dollars and waiting 2 years to develop a business case for a 90% subsidy to build Oaky. Raising Malpas could be done at a fraction of the cost and almost certainly satisfy our needs for many years to come.

Vote for me because…
We need hard-working Councillors, committed to openness and transparency, who scrutinize all proposals, including finances, and put community first. I alerted the community to proposals for vehicles in the Mall, because of the importance of allowing residents to have their say on this important issue. I’ve also scrutinised financial reports and successfully questioned a report that ARC would have to pay $1.2 million to subsidize biodiversity offsets for a developer and also asked why ARC applied for proportionately less pot-hole funding than other councils in our area. In the end, ARC received about $4 million in pot-hole funding, instead of the two instalments ($0.265 and $1.486 million) originally announced by Adam Marshall. I also believe Guyra should have a say on its council, so will support a plebiscite.

Finally, we should not pursue growth at all costs, or risk massive increases in everyone’s water bills to subsidise intensive water users. Instead, we need fair proposals and meaningful community consultation to identify the best ways to provide the most important services that our community wants. We also need to plan for sustainable growth, low-cost renewable energy, advice on energy efficiency and access to all the subsidies for batteries and improved energy efficiency readily available in larger cities as part of our Renewable Energy Zone community benefits packages.

I was fortunate to grow up near Ben Lomond which led to an appreciation of the unique value of small towns and villages in our LGA. After coming to UNE as a student I taught at Duval High, Armidale High and at Armidale Secondary College. My experience teaching convinced me of the huge benefit of listening to young voices which is why I am committed to the re-establishment of an ARC Youth Council. Since retiring I have actively engaged in climate action (against the expansion of coal and coal seam gas projects) and stopping logging of native forests (the trees are, literally and figuratively, worth more standing) such as our own Styx.

Most important issue
The cost of living is the most important issue for the area; Council is well-placed to assist residents
i) through well-planned investment of the community benefits package from the REZ including projects such as low-cost energy deals, encouraging energy efficiency in homes and assisting access to energy efficient rebates;
ii) through control of rates- particularly water rates to ensure that residents aren’t required to subsidise intensive water use for private profit and examining whether the implementation of the third stage of the Special Rate Variation next year is required;
iii) to mitigate medical costs by implementing a raft of measures to ensure we enjoy good air quality and access to the green spaces vital for physical and mental well-being;
iv) ensuring decisions made by Council do not impact unfairly on those experiencing economic hardship;
v) more accessible and trackable reporting of problems

I am firmly committed to grassroots democracy and trust our community to work together to find ways forward which ensure a healthy, safe and resilient community for future generations.

I am now retired and campaign to protect the environment, particularly Styx, Pilliga and Leard Forests. Climate change is the greatest threat to our well-being and to endangered species such as koalas. At all levels of government we must take action on climate change.

I attended Armidale Demonstration School & Armidale High School, and graduated from the University of New England, with a BA and M.Litt (Peace Studies).

My long career as a librarian included work in London, Tasmania, UNE, and Sydney, as law library manager for the Family Court of Australia & the Office of the NSW Director of Public Prosecutions. I retired in 2015 with a good understanding of government at all levels, and as a strong advocate for evidence-based public policy & administration. Following my retirement I volunteered with Friends of the ABC, as Membership Secretary for NSW/ACT. I returned to Armidale last year, attracted by my long connection with the region and the Renewable Energy Zone, which I believe, if implemented fairly and equitably, will benefit both the community & the environment. I am strongly anti-nuclear, and will oppose any suggestion of building a nuclear reactor in New England.

As a non-driver, I am an advocate for provision and maintenance of better footpaths and cycleways, and for road safety (if elected I would ban the purple scooters which I believe are extremely dangerous on Armidale roads). I believe that restoration of a train service north of Armidale for freight and passengers would be of economic benefit to agricultural and other producers, as well as social benefit to travellers and tourists.

Most important issue
The Renewable Energy Zone, which I think will benefit the whole community if Council uses its entitlements wisely, for example, by investing in community batteries and microgrids.
Local and regional transport – especially with the demise of Bonza and Rex.

I am a long term resident of Armidale and have extensive experience in public education. After finishing my degree at UNE, I taught English and History at Armidale High School before transferring to Duval High in 1974, when that school opened. I spent 16 years at Duval High School, as English/ History Head Teacher, 6 years as Deputy Principal at Guyra Central School , 9 years as Principal at Macintyre High School in Inverell and 5 years back at Duval High School as Principal. After retiring, I spent another 5 years working with the NSW Department of Education as a Project Officer working with 30 schools in the New England Region. Since retirement, I have opened a small business providing educational and environmental consulting services; as well providing support for NDIS, mental health and aged care services.

Most important issue
Some of the main issues for this area is the provision of low-cost renewable energy, fair rates and water charges and meaningful community consultation, particularly on issues such as housing, water conservation and resource management. I also believe that the reduction of medical, mental health and aged care services, which has been happening over the last few year , is a priority for many in the region; and ways of addressing this problem needs urgent attention.

Vote for me because…
I believe that urgent action at all levels of government is needed in order to address climate change and protect the environment, particularly in rural communities, such as those in the Northern Tablelands, where both residents (and wildlife) are facing the increasing intensity and frequency of bushfires and floods which destroy property and habitat. Further, it is important that that councils and community members work together, at the local level, to manage environmental resources to ensure their ongoing sustainability for future generations. Further urgent action is needed in this region to address homelessness; and the increasing reduction in general and specialist medical, mental health and aged care support services. Group C – Eli Imad

Eli is a local resident, business owner and investor with a degree in Chemical Engineering and background in civil construction. He brings his considerable experience in all levels of government to our region and is committed to protecting Australian values.

His priority is to ensure regional representation at ARC and pledges to be your voice in Council. He is a proponent of re-opening the Great Northern Railway and opposes renewables on prime agricultural land. Eli is passionate about the rehabilitation of the Mother of Ducks Lagoon.

Most important issue
Review on rates – The councils SRV (special rate variation) was not advocated for, nor was it a policy platform of any councillor at the last election, yet it met little resistance from our elected officials. The Independent Regional Alliance (IRA) will push for genuine public consultation to determine the true ramifications of current rate increases and whether their impact is causing more harm to the community than good.

Return of council electoral wards – The electoral ward system is a time proven method to allow guaranteed representation to rural ratepayers and equity of voting power for all ratepayers. Our first order of business will be to table the re-introduction of Wards. Without electoral wards, and the concentration of majority voters in the city, regional areas in the ARC will continue to suffer the consequences from lack of proper democratic representation.

Reduction of the current financial allowances granted to councillors and Mayor – The honour of serving the public should not be replaced by private financial motives. A maximum allowance of $10,000 per annum for any elected member of council is sufficient compensation in a voluntary role. Considering the 58.8% SRV on rate payers, there is no justification for the outrageous increase to $93,000 in the mayoral allowance. We will propose to bring councillors back to a position of true public service.

Regular public forums – It is incumbent on councillors to have regular and meaningful public engagement with the community outside of the Armidale CBD. Ease of communication between the members of the public and the elected councillors is essential for a functional council. Independent Regional Alliance will be available individually to the community as well as making themselves available for a series of public forums across the regions of the ARC.

More efficient council operations – To attract new families and new business to our region we must have a council that is responsible, responsive and reasonable. If basic functions of council are not respected, duties ignored and essential services too expensive We will promise to cut council red-tape, streamline application processes and introduce time limits on approvals. Effective and professional business conduct will inspire more business investments & growth in the ARC. people will not invest here, and our population will continue to decline. We commit to driving initiatives that will provide sustainable growth to our region.

Council to advocate for return of rail services north of Armidale – A critical step in maintaining and attracting new residents and businesses is connectivity. It is the duty of council to lobby the state government wherever necessary to remove any form of discrimination or disability imposed on ratepayers within the LGA regarding essential public services. We will advocate for the re-opening of the Great Northern Railway.

Rehabilitation of Mother of Ducks Lagoon – We propose to rehabilitate the Mother of Ducks Lagoon within the NSW National Park & Wildlife Service nature reserve. We will work with the State Government, its agencies, Aboriginal groups and residents to restore this wetland. The revitalisation of the Mother of Ducks Lagoon, would make it a tourism destination as well as providing an attraction for the local community.

Independent Regional Alliance (IRA) is a group formed with a primary focus on upholding the fundamental democratic process and providing a true representation of what is important to the ratepayers of our region within Armidale Regional Council.

The Alliance’s lead candidate is Eli Imad, moved to the region two years ago to build a new business, became determined to play a role in the untapped economic growth potential of our region while ensuring the strengthening and protection of our primary producers.

The IRA has come together after recognising the promises of a more efficient and cost-effective council under the forced merger of the former Guyra shire and the Armidale Dumaresq councils have failed to be realised.

With the cost-of-living pressure from the 58.8% rate increase imposed upon our region’s ratepayers during the last term of council along with the increased water and waste charges having negative impacts on families and businesses alike it is now more important than ever to put the local back into local government, to ensure common sense is never overlooked and to pursue a fair go for all.

Rob is a local grazier and rural contractor. He is a long-term ratepayer and active community member of both the former Armidale Dumaresq and Guyra Shire Councils, and current Chair of Save & Grow Guyra Ratepayers Inc.

Renowned activist against forced amalgamation of councils across NSW, Rob is also a passionate advocate for the reinstatement of rail freight, north of Armidale and a supporter of the proposed health supplement factory at Llangothlin. Born and raised in the Guyra district, Peter is raising his family in the area as well. He is a partner in a substantial family farm producing beef cattle, prime lambs and wool. He is also a residential and industrial investor.

Robert was born and raised in Guyra and is now raising his own family there. He became a full-time grazier at the age of 17 years and is a reputable fat lamb and cattle producer.

I was raised on a property near Nundle, completed my schooling at TAS and earned my degree at UNE. I worked in Sydney and abroad for 20 years before returning to Armidale with my family in 2012. Professionally, I still work as an advisor to professional service firms.

In January 2022 I was honoured to be elected Mayor of Armidale Regional Council and it is in this role that I led the turnaround in fortunes of our region. Much of the early planning and heavy lifting has been done in this council term but the implementation requires cohesive leadership to realise our potential.

I’m Jane Mactier, a mother of three primary-aged children at catholic and public schools, a veterinarian, and a farmer at Tenterden Station. The most important issue for our region is water security and supply. Guyra’s current water treatment plant needs immediate replacement, but while we address that, we must also look at improving water storage across the region to secure our future supply. I was raised in small town USA and have lived in Australia for nearly 20 years – the last 10 of which have been in Armidale. My background is in education and I am a life-long teacher. As an archaeologist, I came to Armidale to be a part of UNE, and during this time have spent significant periods in regional communities across Australia and understand regional challenges. Most importantly, I am a mother to an amazing son – and my desire to see this region be all it can grows stronger every time I look at him and underscores my commitment to living lightly on this land and leaving it better than I found it.

Most important issue
Sustainability – both in a Growth and environmental sense. Sustainability is a cornerstone of strategic decision-making – with water security the most significant environmental challenge that extends beyond the capacities of Malpas and Oakey dams. Rather, water security is underpinned by behaviour change, critically looking at our practices. Education is key here. Over my career, I have witnessed the power of education to change lives and open doors to new opportunities – and believe education’s power extends to regional growth and to ensuring environmental considerations are core to decision making around growth.

Vote for me because…
As a Councillor I will ensure there is continual, transparent collaboration and communication between all stakeholders so we can build this future together. I understand hard work. I understand perseverance, dedication and the need to commit to a vision and see it through. I believe that education is a cornerstone of our future – providing not just hope for our children, but new opportunities for our region. My experience as a leader and former Council member at UNE has shown me, however, the importance of being able to work with across the aisle. If this region is to turn around, we need to respect one another, and work together. I will ensure that strategic decision-making is inclusive, and that there is clear and continued communication between UNE and Armidale Regional Council.

I plan to continue to support the growth of this region by being very open minded to any new comers wanting to start their business here. This region didn’t ask for the REZ to be established here, but we have it so I will work to make the most of it. I have enjoyed working with the community over the last couple of terms and I believe we need to grow, but still need to keep Armidale, Guyra and our other smaller villages with a nice rural feel.

Most important issue
Undoubtedly, the greatest challenge the Armidale region faces is stagnant or low growth.

Without growth the region will never reach its potential, remaining a poor cousin to others which attract the eye and wallets of state and federal governments.

I am part of a group who knows what needs to be done, has demonstrated evidence of being able to collaborate and reach consensus on important matters, rather than be distracted by factional issues.

Over the last term we’ve laid down the critical plans of how to grow as well as the necessary associated support services, and in the next term we will execute these strategies.

I am a 5th generation Armidalian and over that time my family have done quite a bit to establish our region as we know it today.

I have had a diverse career, with the first 20 years being in the retail sector and the last 22 being in the employment, disability and community radio sectors. The main them of my career has been in management and I currently manage 2ARMFM (Armidale Community Radio).

I have also had 10 years experience as a Councillor, first on Armidale City Council (1998-2000) and then Armidale Dumaresq Council (2008-2016).

I have been president of the Armidale & District Chamber of Commerce (for a few years during the 1990s) and chaired the Armidale Autumn Festival (for a few years in the early 2000s). I have been on various committees such as Armidale Family Support Services and Armidale Community Radio and have been involved with the Armidale Regional Ratepayers Association (ARRA) since 2019 and am currently on the executive of that organisation. I am a director on the board of Jobs Australia Enterprises where I am treasurer.

I have two children and four grandchildren and am married to my second wife, Heng Sun, and we live in Armidale with our tripawed Kelpie X, Eddie.

Water security!
After the devastating drought of 2019 I became very involved in trying to get the wall of Malpas Dam raised, working with ARRA and also working closely with our then state member Adam Marshall MP. After some years of hard work Adam managed to reserve $27 million for this work to be done, however, this was pending a business plan, which wasn’t Adam’s responsibility. What happened after that is somewhat of a mystery and some months ago (in around April 2024) I started hearing stories that this grant no longer existed. I followed this up with Aileen MacDonald MLC who has asked quite a number of questions of the NSW Minister for Water. The Minister said that the money was never put in the 2022/23 NSW State Budget.

My questions are, for how long did Armidale Regional Council know this to be the case?
The Minister also said that the water infrastructure requirements for our region will require a spend of $300 million and that Council will need to partner with some group or another to achieve this. I got the strong impression that the state government aren’t going to quickly put their hand up to help.

In the ‘Meet the Candidate’ forum last week (4/09/2024) a question was asked of the number 1 candidates as to what would be the first thing that they would do on day 1 if elected. Because I am running as the number 2 candidate with Group E, I was not asked this question, however, had I been, my answer would have been to find out why the $27 million disappeared, who was responsible for this huge oversight and what can we do to get it (and more) back!

At the 23 March 2022 Armidale Regional Council Ordinary Meeting, the Public Works Authority’s Integrated Water Cycle Management recommended that Council purchase the Oaky River Dam from Essential Energy ($4.3 million) and that the repair of this dam and the construction of a pipeline into Armidale ($120 + million) should take priority over the raising of the Malpas Dam wall (pushed out to 2042). This was supported unanimously by Councillors and is still Council’s position. In my opinion this priority is completely the wrong way around and Malpas Dam, and also Guyra Dam, must be done first as a matter of urgency.

We are currently no better off with our water security needs (in the sort to medium term) than we were in 2019.

“I have 10 years’ experience as a Councillor. During my 2008 to 2012 term of Council I was on the Economic Development Committee that did the land re-zoning, connected up the services and laid the groundwork for what is now known as the Armidale Airside Business Park. This has opened up a large amount of industrially-zoned land and I call it ‘the gift that keeps giving’.
I have worked hard since 2019 on our water security issue and I am primarily running for Council because I don’t believe it has been handled well by this current Council and the one before (which was put in temporary administration).

If elected I would work in all areas required of me as a Councillor, as I did in my previous (almost) 10 years of service, and would listen carefully, as I did before, to the needs of the constituents of our region.

I am also very interested in the well-being of the Armidale CBD and can see obvious things that need doing, such as linking the Coles Food Emporium to the East Mall, opening up Dangar Street between Moore and Dumaresq Streets and reducing the parking times at the Cinders Lane and Moore Street car parks to create more traffic churn and make it easier for shoppers to find a park, particularly those who want to shop in the Mall.”

Most important issue is liveability with necessary infrastructure facilities, services and community cohesion at a time when powerful figures and agencies in society is focused more on self-image building rather than common good. When public sector institutions staff losing community spirit and welfare mindedness as a result of neoliberal, user pay policies and practices, the community suffers. Council should be an advocate for the community interest-not sectional interest if we are to preserve the unity and cohesion. Social justice and fair go should be our motto.

Vote for me because…
A councillor today should be able to read and comprehend many policy documents,regulations, plans and complex consultant reports to make informed decisions. At the University of New England, I mastered this skill in relation to higher education and university and education policies, plans and corresponding strategies. I will be abnle to transfer this knowledge and skills to the council easily and make a contribution. I am also a person with empathy, a caring attitude and skilled in teamwork. Collaboration and compromise are hallmarks of my way of thinking and acting. I am of the view that one person does not hold all knowledge. Image building is not my flavour and I want to bring out local knowledge for problem solving with minimal cost.

Local roads and transport.
Local and rural roads are a vital link for the rural communities to access their local towns and services plus get produce to market or on transport. Without this they cannot run their businesses.
Local transportation for rural communities to access Medical/shopping/appointments, especially those that do not drive, or who don’t have family or friends to drive them. This I think is a big issue for most country people.

I was born, grew up and educated to university level in Armidale. Over the last 17 years I have worked in various agricultural roles, mostly related to, but not limited to the sheep industries. Most important issue
I believe in government minimisation. The size of government in proportion to the economy affects so many aspects of society. For instance, the viability of many small and medium businesses is undermined by high overhead costs. Land rates are a substantial overhead cost. Even housing affordability is affected by the level of government fees and taxes incurred while releasing new land for residential development.

I am a wife, mother and grandmother. I have lived almost all my life in Armidale, I regularly attend a spinning group in Guyra and love to share ideas and knowledge.
I am a business woman, fibre artist, designer, and dancer.
I support many community events and help out community groups, from school fundraisers to Cancer Councils Dancing with the Armidale Stars.
I love to garden and to travel but as much as I enjoy discovering new places I am happiest when I come home.

Most important issue
I have lived in Armidale almost all my life, I have conducted and Developed a successful business for close to 30 years. I have watched as the Region has almost ground to a halt, we need to start moving again.

During my business career I have spoken to many other small business owners. I am concerned with the enormous amount of red tape around business expansion, I believe council should adopt a cooperative and supportive approach to business and its development, whether that’s new business to town or existing businesses. Armidale needs more activity, we have a lot to offer visitors, but can we do more? What is needed to entice people to stay an extra few days or maybe even pause on their journey for a bite to eat, every person stopping in town provides an opportunity to expand visitor numbers. Do we do enough?

There will be some larger issues which need to be tackled, water seems to be in everyone’s minds. There is no point making large projects battle grounds, it’s irrelevant how we arrived at a point of action, the really important thing is to manage projects, manage budgets, and optimise value for ratepayers. I know rising costs hurt, but they hurt even more if finances don’t deliver adequate outcomes.

I have never had the opportunity to work with an unlimited amount of money, not many of us have. This means I am capable of working inside a framework dictated by available resources, I am used to being flexible and reactive.

People should vote for me if they want to, if you believe as I do that Armidale needs councillors who are willing to make decisions, advocate for change, and break down unnecessary barriers for development, then you should put a number in the box next to my name.

Our family and I have lived in Armidale for nine years, appreciating the region’s unspoiled beauty, four seasons, and serenity. I am into the IT software business and have always had a strong desire to get involved in community development initiatives since it gives me the chance to help the community. I began by volunteering my time to support local community organisations and other charities. This led to my involvement in community work on a professional level for several non-profit organisations. At the moment, I am engaged with a non-profit to support the diverse migrant community in delivering settlement and employment pathway support programs around the New England region.

Most important issue
There is more than one issue to be addressed to support the vision for growth. In my view,
Strengthening the health workforce: To advocate and lobby for an increase in the health workforce in this region by implementing creative promotional programmes and supporting the settlement by filling the much-needed gaps.

Creating a thriving business environment: Ensure that the necessary infrastructure is in place to support business growth through various initiatives and strategies.

Youth Engagement: Develop youth-focused programs and events by allowing and empowering young people in the community to co-design projects based on their indicated interests.

Infrastructure support that includes a detailed water management plan and public transport to connect the surrounding small regions.

We need a council that takes a balanced approach to nurturing growth across all areas.

My experience as a business owner and community development professional over the past seven years has given me a deep understanding of the region’s potential and needs. My passion for Guyra’s growth has led me to serve as Chairperson for the Gurya Neighbourhood Center Committee, aiming to improve community engagement and make a bigger impact in the area.
