In a brand-new event for the region, Armidale’s Central Park and Tingcombe Lane will become a sea of light and festivity on Friday 23 August. The Armidale Light Festival is an exciting new initiative from Armidale Council and promises to be a fun, family-friendly night out.
Renata Davis, Manager for Activations and Precincts at Armidale Regional Council said, “Central Park is one of our most beautiful parklands so we’re really excited to see it light up and come alive for the festival.”
Inspired by the Vivid Festival in Syndey, Armidale’s Light Festival is one of 130 events across the state which have been funded by the $8.7 million NSW Open Streets Program. The program is designed to bring vibrancy to main streets and create welcoming public events.
The theme for the first Armidale Light Festival is Elements of Nature.
A press release by Council said “The theme will explore the wonder and beauty of our region and its natural environment, offering free entertainment for the entire community.”
In a nod to this theme, the park will feature five exciting zones, highlighting elements of fire, water, air, earth and space.
As well as a focus on providing a free and entertaining evening night out for local families, there is also a strong emphasis on showcasing local artistry.
Asides from several immersive light shows, digital art, lanterns and fire twirling, the evening will also feature live music, community performances, a musical soundscape by Brendan Mooney and roaming artists.
UNE Discovery will be on site with interactive experiences, and NERAM Drumming and Circus will be providing kids’ workshops.
Even the local schools have got involved, with primary schools and preschools creating their own light sculptures which will be displayed on the evening, and high schools providing singing and musical performances throughout the night.
Some highlights for of the evening include:
· An enchanted ‘fibre field’ garden with a coordinated sound and light show
· A 14m heated dome feature light projections and local dance performances
· Roving giant puppets and lanterns, some of which over 3.5m high
· An Indigenous digital art display by Narmi Collins-Widders
“The Armidale Light Festival is not just about lights; it’s about creating a magical experience for everyone and bringing our community together,” Armidale Mayor Sam Coupland said.
“With the cost-of-living crisis impacting many families, it is great to be able to put on an event that is free for the entire community and that celebrates the last few weeks of the winter months.”
“Our goal with this festival is to create a vibrant, inclusive event that brings joy and inspiration to everyone who comes along.”
It is hoped that the event will be a huge success and will then become an annual occurrence for Armidale.
A number of local food trucks will be set up across Tingcombe Lane, which will be closed for the event. Fire pits and additional seating will also be available so that families can sit and enjoy their delicious food by a cozy fire.
