Tamworth businessman Bryan Singh is stepping outside his comfort zone for a good cause.

Trading in ball-point pens for ballroom shoes, Singh has thrown his hat into the ring for Stars of Tamworth Dance for Cancer title.

“In a moment of sheer madness, I suggested that anybody could do it, clearly a dramatic overstatement,” said Singh.

But up to the challenge he will rise, knowing he is doing it for his family, friends, and his community.

“The Cancer Council is a great organisation and certainly a charity I am keen to support,” he said.

“My mum was treated successfully for bowel cancer, but still lives with the consequences of the treatment, while my dad died of prostate cancer.”

“I have many friends who have dealt with various cancer diseases, and this is a show of support for them, and anything anybody does to make this journey easier is a good thing.”

“Cancer is not necessarily a death sentence, and the Cancer Council offers hope and support for those with the disease.”

“It would be easy to just write out a cheque for the charity, however, dancing in front of a live audience is way out of my comfort zone, but has the potential to raise awareness, show support and raise a heap of money.”

Teaming up with former Stars dancer, Erika Savage, they are hoping their work together in Rotary can transfer to the dancefloor.

“Training is going better than I expected,” said Singh.

“I am doing modern ballroom, which needs a bit more polish than my usual dancing at a wedding or ball dance style.”

“I really want to do the best I can, and I am encouraged by my grandchildren – Bridget, Parkie and Frankie – who know I am dancing in front of people.”

“Their words of support are ‘Oh Poppy’,”

Singh has raised over $2,000 so far, but he isn’t done yet, with a target of $3,000. And there is still time before the big event.

The 10th year of Stars of Tamworth will take place on Saturday 14th September at the Tamworth Town Hall.

Tickets will be available soon, and you won’t want to miss out.

“It will be a fun night. I watched it last year and really enjoyed the night,” Singh said.

“If you can’t get there on the night, still support a dancer.”

“They are being courageous, and they are putting a heap of their time into the rehearsals and fundraising events. It is a great community event.”
