World Gin Day is upon us, this Saturday, 8th June.

The annual event is a global celebration of all things gin, held on the second Saturday in June. Started in 2009 in the UK, it has become a global day to acknowledge the contribution of this classic liquor from the juniper berry.

And with an increasing number of boutique distilleries – including New England favourites like Dobson’s and Glen Gowrie – World Gin Day is becoming more popular here too. World Gin Day Ambassador ‘The Gin Queen’ Caroline Ashford lists nearly 1000 Australian gins on her website.

Gin is usually consumed as a cool drink with ice and/or other mixes, so typically World Gin Day usually focuses on martinis and other cold cocktails. However, Gin Day for us falls in Winter. So, why not make a Hot Gin Toddy?

David from Glen Gowrie Dirstillery says they’ll be serving this at the distillery on Saturday (anticipated max. temperature in Glen Innes of 11C, with drizzle – sounds great!)

Here’s the recipe if you’d like to make it for yourself at home. This makes 1 drink:

  • 30mL Glen Gowrie Distillery Highlands Gin
  • 1Tbs Nature’s Beez Yellow Box honey
  • 1Tbs fresh Gunnible pink Navel Orange juice
  • 1 whole star anise
  • Cinnamon stick to serve
  • Thinly sliced Gunnible pink Navel Orange
  • Thinly sliced @Greenhillorchards Fuji Apple

How to make:
Combine gin, orange juice and honey in a glass. Add star anise and ½ cup (125mL)
warm water. Serve with slices of orange and apple and a cinnamon stick as a swizzle. Enjoy
in front of the fire!! Eat all the garnishes (except the Cinnamon and Anise)!!

Whether you’re already a fan of the juniper spirit, or looking for an intro, have a wonderful World Gin Day!
