The Northern Tablelands will head to the polls to select a representative to replace Adam Marshall on Saturday June 22.

The by-election was triggered by Mr Marshall’s resignation earlier this month, as he leaves politics to pursue other opportunities.

So far, only the Nationals have announced a candidate. Moree lawyer Brendan Moylan has already been out on the campaign trail, attending events in Armidale, Moree, and wherever else Adam Marshall takes him along.

At least two members of the region’s local council are currently sounding out supporters for a likely independent run, but are not close to declaring their candidacy. The Greens are currently going through their pre-selection processes, and Labor may choose not to run as has become the custom of both major parties in ‘unwinnable’ by-elections.

The key dates for the election are as follows:

  • 20 May: Postal vote applications open
  • 31 May: Nominations open
  • 6 June: Nominations close
  • 7 June: Announcement of candidates and conduct of ballot draw
  • 11 June: Postal votes sent out
  • 15 June: Early voting and telephone assisted voting starts
  • 17 June: Close of postal vote applications
  • 21 June: Early voting closes
  • 22 June: Election day voting
  • 5 July: Close of postal vote returns
  • 9 July: Distribution of preferences
  • 10 July: Declaration of results

Voting in the election is compulsory for anyone registered to vote in the Northern Tablelands.

Candidates thinking about nominating should be sure to familiarise themselves with the rules and nomination process as soon as possible.
