It’s time to doll up and dust off those suits, as Tamworth gets ready for one of the region’s biggest days on the racing calendar.

On Friday, April 26, Tamworth Jockey Club will host the Tamworth City Toyota Tamworth Cup, and you’re invited.

“The Tamworth Cup is run over 1400m and is worth $200 thousand,” said Jack Penfold, General Manager Tamworth Jockey Club.

“The top two horses, first and second, will be eligible to go to Sydney to race in the big race, and this sparks a lot of interest from metropolitan stable around the Sydney area, and that bring plenty of good horses to our track for this race.”

If you are thinking of purchasing tickets you had better get in quick. Tickets to the member’s luncheon room is sold out, however, there are still minimal tickets available for the garden party and the trackside pavilion.

“They will sell out, so it is shaping up to be a pretty big day.” said Jack.

Tickets can be purchased through the Tamworth Jockey Clubs Facebook Page or website.

“At the moment general admission is $10, but after ANZAC Day that will go up to $20 on the day.

Track Conditions

For Tamworth Jockey Club’s GM, the track has never looked better. And we can thank the rains for making everything picture perfect.

“I can’t fold the track at all, it looks perfect,” said Jack.

“Paul Chalmers, our track manager has done a tremendous job.”

“My time in coming to the Jockey Club, and in the racing industry for about 12 years, i have never seen the Tamworth track look this good,”

Local Talent in Display

The New England region can expect to showcase some of our best trainers and jockeys on the day, names dropping the likes of; Michelle Flemming, Cody Morgan, Melanie O’Gorman, Sue Grills, Troy O’Neil, Steve Myers

“Michelle Flemming is one of our small local trainers, she won the Tamworth Cup prelude last week, so she gains automatic entry into the cup,” said Jack.

“So, we will be watching her as a local chance.”

“Steve Myers will be hoping to get his horse that won the Quirindi and Walcha Cup into the Tamworth Cup, hopefully his benchmark is high enough.”

“Our local trainers should go very well on the day.”

Off the Track

And event organisers aren’t leaving everything on the track, with Fashions on the Field expected to make crown even more monarchs this year.

“We have four categories for the Fashions on the Field, including children events this year,” said Jack.

“We will be crowning a little miss and a little mister, and plenty of prizes up for grabs with a lot of local businesses to thank for those.”

“This event is always hotly contested so I will be staying away from that.”

One less competitor, so your chances of winning just got better.

So, watch your liquor this Anzac Day and get ready to back up for the Tamworth Cup.

“Take the Friday off and make it a long weekend and come out to the Cup.” said Jack.

“With tickets sales and a lot of interest, we expect this to be one of our biggest cups.”
