The first whistles have been blown for regional netball in the New England, as Tamworth hosts the Regional League season starter.

Teams from all across the New England took part, from Glen Innes, Inverell, Quirindi, Tamworth, Armidale, Narrabri and Gunnedah.

“We had an awesome weekend with lots of teams, talent and spectators to fill the Tamworth Sports dome.” said Melissa Bolsom, publicity officer Tamworth Netball Association.

Tamworth opens were undefeated after day 1 and kept their winning streak to the end, beating Glen Innes 31 to 22 in the Division 1 Grand Final.

Meanwhile, Inverell downed Tamworth 17s in closer match, 25 to 21, to take the Division 2 crown.

Organiser’s has welcomed the new Regional League format, giving all teams their first meet for the regional representative teams ahead of the season.

“Regional League is usually held later in the year but this year they moved it to March, which is better because we put out rep teams in.” said Melissa.

“It cleared the cob webs out as we prepare for the state titles in June and a chance to play together as a team.”

Special mention from the weekend have gone to two Tamworth ladies who have been names MVP’s of the weekend.

“The umpires do a 3,2,1 points system to determine who are the best players on the court and this year, Tamworth Open’s Gabi Higgins won it for div one, and Mia Gentle from our Tamworth 17s won it for div 2.”

The trophy is not only an honour on its own merits, but is named after Tamworth Netball legacy, Dot Lockwood.

“It was lovely to have it go to two Tamworth girls.” said Melissa.

Netball will continue to hit the courts for Saturday competition in May, with registrations now open.
