A Police Strikeforce has been set up to investigate the stabbing of a well-respected doctor during a home invasion in Armidale over the weekend.

Prominent cardiologist Dr James Leitch was reportedly stabbed in the back, when four men broke into his home on Garibaldi Street and stole a watch and mobile phones on Sunday night. He was taken to hospital in a stable condition, and later underwent surgery at John Hunter Hospital for his injuries.

Dr Leitch was born and raised in Armidale and is currently the Head of Cardiology at John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle. He is now recovering there, and said to be in good spirits.

His attackers are on the run, with what is believed to be their getaway car later found on fire in parkland off Niagara Street. Police have been making inquiries, but do not yet have a description of the offenders.

Police are investigating the incident under Strikeforce Laperouse and are appealing for information from the Armidale community. Police would particularly like to hear from anyone with CCTV or dash cam footage from either Garibaldi Street or Niagara Street on Sunday night.
