Inverell Shire Council is hosting a series of free events during the school holidays, including the opportunity for young people to learn how to make their own podcast or learn how to use social media as a business tool in three workshops at the Inverell Shire Public Library next week.

Stephanie Aceglav from Media for Millennials, who is providing the workshops, says the workshops are targeted to a younger audience, and people aged 14-24 are eligible to come to these free sessions and gain many new skills.

“There are many benefits to learning how to start your own podcast, especially for youth as many schools offer students the option to deliver their assignments as a podcast.”

“It also teaches them a different writing and speaking style for broadcast media and can help with public speaking confidence. They also learn how to record and edit audio on a free software, which means they can keep podcasting after they finish working with me,” Ms Aceglav said.

She says that if you have the right tools and resources, it’s not hard to start at all to start your own podcast.

“I make sure to show the students how  they can podcast both with and without an external microphone, use free recording and editing software and have access to free royalty free music and sound effects.”

“There are also free host sites, so once you’re ready you can publish your podcast to the big platforms like Spotify for free as well.”

“Everyone has a story to tell and this is a fantastic platform to share and connect. You can also use podcasts to share information, instructions, or teach someone how to do something for example you could start a cooking podcast.”

Social Media skills are now an important component to almost every workforce as most businesses are active on social media. The social media workshop will cover Instagram, Instagram reels, Stories, Facebook and Twitter and discuss the many other platforms including TikTok. The purpose of this workshop is to understand how to use social media as a business tool and learn how to take interesting photos and videos and write engaging posts.

“This is also an entrepreneurial workshop and would be great for anyone already running or thinking of starting a small business or a side business,” Ms Aceglav said.

There are still a few spots left for each workshop to be held at the Inverell Shire Public Library, but those who want to attend must book.
